The Best Buddies conference shifted my perspective
A Letter from a Campus Coordinator
By Danielle Lamb, Campus Coordinator, Glendon College
I just wanted to write you a short note to express how much I enjoyed the conference this past weekend. This will be my first year with Best Buddies and I have never before been involved with an organization such as this one.
Despite much council and volunteer experience, I knew little about working with persons with intellectual challenges.
Yet this weekend touched me more profoundly than any other experience. When I saw the buddies and their excitement mount with every new arrival to check into the hotel, the way their faces beamed when their pictures was taken and the constant bursts of laughter and giggles for no particular reason at all, I learned more from the buddies and those that work tirelessly with them, than I will ever learn from any lecture or university text.
I learned that trivial things that fill my worried mind are really not as significant as I once deemed them to be. I also learned that joy is not found in grades, gifts, popularity or material possessions, but rather joy is found in others loving them and letting yourself be loved by them. I will always remember this experience and I look forward to working with you in the future.
