There are several ways that you can help Best Buddies Canada enhance our communities through one-to-one friendships between people with intellectual disabilities and students.

Are you...

Each University/College Best Buddies chapter requires committed student volunteers to be matched in a one-to-one friendships with adults with intellectual disabilities. Student volunteers can also take on a leadership role with their chapter in addition to being matched with an adult with an intellectual disability.

The positions available to you as a University/College Student:

Chapter President
A university or college student responsible for chapter leadership, administration, delegation of responsibility and recruitment with the goal of establishing a strong chapter.

Executive Member

A university or college student who is a member of a Best Buddies chapter and paired up with an adult/student with an intellectual disability. Student Buddies call their "Buddies" once per week, and go out for coffee, dinner, movies, walks, etc. every two weeks.

Student Buddy

A university or college student who is a member of a Best Buddies chapter and paired up with an adult/student with an intellectual disability. Student Buddies call their "Buddies" once per week, and go out for coffee, dinner, movies, walks, etc. every two weeks.

Associate Member

A student chapter member who is not paired with a Buddy. Associate Members assist with activities and events and attend group activities.

A Peer Buddy who helps the Chapter President to lead, organize and maintain a Best Buddies chapter at his/her high school.

Buddy Advocate

A student with an intellectual disability responsible for chapter leadership, with the goal of establishing a strong chapter.

Buddy

A student with an intellectual disability who is a member of a Best Buddies chapter who is paired with a high school student in a one-to-one friendship. Buddies call their "Peer Buddies" on the telephone once per week, and see them every two weeks. All Buddies must apply through the partner agency for a particular chapter.

Peer Buddy

A high school student who is a member of a Best Buddies chapter, who is paired up with a student with an intellectual disability. Peer Buddies call their "Buddies" once per week, and go out for coffee, dinner, movies, walks, etc. every two weeks.

Associate Member

A student chapter member who is not paired with a Buddy. Associate Members assist with activities and events and attend group activities.

The positions available to you as a High School Teacher:

Special Education Advisor
A teacher who is familiar with students in the Special Education Department. This individual works with the Chapter President to screen volunteers, match buddy pairs and monitor matches throughout the year.

Staff Advisor

A teacher who acts as a resource to a high school chapter throughout the year by providing guidance to the Chapter President, Executive, Peer Buddies and Associate Members.

Adults with intellectual disabilities can volunteer to be matched in a one-to-one friendship with a university or college student, and to be part of the chapter leadership team. 

The positions available to you as an adult:

Buddy
An adult with an intellectual disability who is a member of a Best Buddies chapter who is paired with a university or college student in a one-to-one friendship. Buddies call their "Student Buddies" on the telephone once per week, and see them every two weeks. All Buddies must apply through the partner agency for a particular chapter.

Buddy Advocate
An adult with an intellectual disability who is a member of a Best Buddies chapter who is paired with a university or college student in a one-to-one friendship. Buddy Advocates are part of the executive team of a Best Buddies chapter. They make decisions about group events, speak on events, and present their and the Buddies' opinions to make decisions accordingly.

Each Best Buddies chapter requires a host site. A host site is a group home, supported employment program or community association, working directly with adults with intellectual disabilities, that forms a partnership with Best Buddies to recruit and match Buddies with students.

The positions available to you as an adult who works for an agency:

Host Site Coordinator
The individual who is the resource/support at the Host Site. This individual assist in screening the volunteers, matches buddy pairs and acts as a representative at the information session.
